For SQL Server professionals, this meant accepting a 5-10% CPU overhead as the price of admission for features like vMotion and HA clustering. But the landscape changed overnight. Following Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware, the shift from perpetual licensing to mandatory subscription bundles has turned a technical preference into a financial liability.
For mid-market firms running high-core-count SQL Server instances, the 'Broadcom Tax' isn't just about the hypervisor license itself. Reclaiming the 'Hidden' Performance
SQL Server is a resource-hungry engine. It thrives on predictable memory latency and direct access to high-speed storage. Even with modern features like VT-x and EPT, hypervisors introduce abstraction layers in the CPU scheduler. In a virtualized environment, a SQL Server instance might experience 'co-stop' time or ready-time latency if the hypervisor is oversubscribed.
By moving back to bare metal or a thin hypervisor layer like Hyper-V/Azure Stack HCI, DBAs are reclaiming that 10% performance hit.
